Placido Domingo‘s triumphant “return” to his baritone roots (his first debut with the Mexican National Opera, in 1959, was as a baritone), is captured in this stunning DVD of the Teatro alla Scala’s 2010 production of Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra. Domingo is joined by Anja Harteros, Ferruccio Furlanetto and Fabio Sartori in this Daniel Barenboim conducted performance, directed by Federico Tiezzi. Plácido Domingo’s intention had been to bring down the curtain on his career in the (baritone) role of Simon Boccanegra. One can only hope – for our sake as well as his – that this truly great tenor of the modern era reneges on his promise and remains a unique vocal and dramatic presence on the opera stage long after the 70th birthdaycelebrations that were held in his honour on 21 January 2011.

Stiffelio is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi, from an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, based on the French play Le pasteur, ou L'évangile et le foyer by Émile Souvestre and Eugène Bourgeois, which had been translated into Italian by Gaetano Vestri as Stifellius. Stiffelio, the searing drama of adultery, jealousy, religious devotion, and reconciliation, is sung by an all-star cast led by Plácido Domingo. Performed at the Metropolitan Opera in 1993, this rarely staged masterpiece was conducted by James Levine, directed by Giancarlo del Monaco, and filmed by Brian Large.

Aida is an opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Antonio Ghislanzoni, based on a scenario often attributed to French Egyptologist Auguste Mariette, although Verdi biographer Mary Jane Phillips-Matz has argued that the scenario was actually written by Temistocle Solera. Aida was first performed at the Khedivial Opera House in Cairo on 24 December 1871. This opera is conducted by James Levine and featuring the Metropolitan Opera Ballet and Orchestra anc Chorus. Stars Dimitri Kavrakos, Dolora Zajick, Aprile Millo, Placido Domingo and Sherill Milnes.

Giacomo Puccini's Wild West opera has the California gold rush as its dramatic backdrop for a story in which Minnie, the only woman in a mining camp, gambles on her one chance of happiness. Lorin Maazel conducts a fine cast in Jonathan Miller's 1991 production of the compelling and evocative opera, which Puccini himself considered his best work.

Even as these God-given talents age and reunite, tenors Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti deliver the goods to an adoring French audience accompanied by the Orchestra de Paris under the baton of James Levine. This inspiring DVD captures the live-in-Paris concert and is complemented by a behind-the-scenes documentary and interviews with the three stars.

Filmed live in Berlin, Anna Netrebko and Placido Domingo star in one of Verdi’s greatest operas, under the baton of Daniel Barenboim. Il Trovatore is without question one of Verdi’s most dramatic masterpieces – as well as one of his most melodic, including the irresistible ‘Anvil Chorus’ and the tenor showstopper ‘Di quella pira’. Anna Netrebko makes her debut as Leonora, triumphing in a uniquely demanding role for a Verdi soprano and one she will sing again at the 2014 Salzburg Festival. Adored for his legendary performances in the title role, Placido Domingo here sings the baritone role of the troubador’s arch-rival, the aristocratic Count di Luna.

On the evening of 7 July 1990 an "impossible dream" came true: the three most famous tenors in the world joined forces with an orchestra of two hundred musicians against a backdrop of the majestic scenery of ancient Rome. In the famous Baths of Caracalla on a brilliant starlit night with a full moon rising, José Carreras, Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti, together with Maestro Zubin Mehta, presented an evening of arias, songs and medleys which was unique in musical history. For the six thousand fortunate people who crowded into Caracalla that evening and the television audience of eight hundred million it was an experience never to be forgotten. But few at the time could have realised the full historical significance of the concert and the profound effect it would have on the popular perception of classical music. The concert has been broadcast and rebroadcast again and again and has always been received with undiminished enthusiasm. The album has sold more copies than any other classical recording ever, and its overwhelming popularity led to a repeat concert to coincide with the 1994 World Cup final in Los Angeles, followed by a world tour spanning the four continents of Asia, Europe, America and Australasia. The concert also became the first-ever classical release to appear on DVD video. With the unique combination of studio-quality pictures plus 5-channel surround sound, this release of the "Three Tenors" offers the most faithful document yet of that remarkable moment in musical history.

The performance on this DVD was recorded when Un ballo in maschera was revived for six performances the following year, with the same cast and with Solti back on the podium. However, 40,000 applications for tickets could not be met, and it may have been some comfort to the ticketless that ORF transmitted the première live on television - not only to Austria but also simultaneously to Japan. The joint enterprise with NHK Tokyo also involved state of the art technical resources.

The legendary tenors José Carreras, Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti, together with conductor Zubin Mehta, celebrated the finale to soccer’s 1994 World Cup with a concert described as “probably the biggest single musical event in history”.
